Warner Bros. Greenlights ‘Mortal Kombat 3’ Ahead of Sequel Release

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially given the go-ahead for Mortal Kombat 3, marking the third installment in the studio’s rebooted fighting game franchise.

The announcement was made by Mortal Kombat II screenwriter Jeremy Slater during a panel at New York Comic-Con, where he confirmed that work on the next film is already underway. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and New Line will once again handle production and distribution.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie,” Slater said, referring to Mortal Kombat II. “They’re so excited, so convinced there’s a huge fanbase waiting for it, that they’ve already hired me to start writing the next installment.”

The move comes even before Mortal Kombat II hits theaters, a clear indication of the studio’s confidence in the franchise’s momentum. The sequel – which follows the 2021 reboot that reintroduced the iconic video game saga to a new generation – is currently in post-production and slated for release on May 15, 2026, after being pushed back from its initial October 2025 date.

While plot details and casting information for Mortal Kombat 3 remain under wraps, the early greenlight suggests Warner Bros. is doubling down on its investment in the series following strong fan reactions to the upcoming sequel’s red-band trailer.

The first Mortal Kombat (2021) enjoyed a successful box office run despite pandemic-era challenges, reigniting interest in one of gaming’s most storied franchises. With Mortal Kombat II on the horizon and a third film now confirmed, the brutal cinematic universe looks poised for a long and bloody future.
