WHO Declares an End to Covid Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization has announced that Covid-19 no longer poses a global health emergency, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the pandemic.

According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO, the organization’s Covid emergency committee recommended an end to the public health emergency of international concern, which he has accepted.

In a tweet, he expressed hope and declared that Covid-19 is over as a global health emergency.
The pandemic, which originated in China and rapidly spread to nearly every part of the world, was initially declared a public health emergency by WHO on January 30, 2020.

Despite the deadly nature of the disease, the organization was hesitant to recommend travel or trade restrictions.

The death rate from Covid-19 has slowed down from a high of more than 100,000 individuals per week in January 2021 to a little over 3,500 in the week ending April 24, 2023, according to WHO data.

Although the public health emergency may have ended, Covid-19 continues to pose a danger, particularly to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.

There is also a lot of uncertainty about long Covid, which is characterized by symptoms that persist after the initial infection.

As of May 3rd, there have been more than 765 million cases of Covid-19 reported globally, with over 6.9 million fatalities.

In the United States, there have been 103 million confirmed cases and 1.1 million deaths. As of April 30th, approximately 13.3 billion doses of vaccines have been administered worldwide.
