Liverpool Defeat Manchester City 3-1 to Win Community Shield | Watch Highlights
Liverpool kicked off their campaign for the 2022-2023 season with a win over defending Premier League champions, Manchester City 3-1 to win the Community Shield, their first title for this season.
A goal from Trent Alexandre Arnold in the first half put Liverpool on the front foot as Manchester City struggled to get a grip on the game al through the first half with Liverpool maintaining a dominant control of the ball for most part of the opening half.
Manchester City, however, emerged stronger in the second half particularly with the introduction of Phil Foden and new signing Juan Alvarez.
Alvarez eventually levelled the score line for Manchester City with a goal perfectly set up by Foden after Liverpool goalkeeper failed to get a strong grip on the ball after saving Foden’s attempt.
The introduction of Darwin Nunez in the second half after coming on for Roberto Firminho rejuvenated Liverpool’s attack as he tormented the Manchester City backline with his blistering runs and attempts on goal.
He set up Liverpool’s second goal by winning his side a penalty, which was perfectly slotted into the bottom right corner to give Liverpool a 2-1 lead.
The nail to the coffin came from Nunez as headed in a third to give Liverpool a 3-1 lead over Manchester City with a diving header.
Erling Haaland had an attempt save in the first half and came close to scoring a second goal for Manchester City but was denied by the post.
