Wikipedia’s Most Popular Pages of 2024 Revealed

Wikipedia, a go-to source of information for millions worldwide, has unveiled its most-visited pages for 2024. Released by the Wikimedia Foundation, the list highlights the topics that captured global attention this year, offering a unique insight into the year’s cultural, political, and social trends.

The English-language version of the site, viewed over 76 billion times globally by October, reflected a mix of interest in U.S. politics, pop culture, Indian cricket, and global events.

Top Articles of 2024

Leading the list was the “List of Deaths in 2024”, which amassed over 44 million views, continuing its streak as one of the most-visited pages in recent years. Since the Wikimedia Foundation began releasing its rankings in 2015, this topic has consistently ranked in the top three.

Political figures also drew significant attention, with articles on Vice President Kamala Harris and the 2024 U.S. presidential election ranking second and third, each nearing 30 million views. President-elect Donald Trump returned to the top five after a hiatus, while Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and the Project 2025 initiative also secured spots in the top 10.

Popular culture dominated the remainder of the list. Renewed interest in the Menendez brothers, following a Netflix documentary about their 1989 case, propelled their page to fourth place with 26 million views. Other cultural highlights included Taylor Swift, whose global Eras Tour earned her the 11th spot, and Sean “Diddy” Combs, who faced legal controversies this year, landing him in the top 25.

Movies also played a significant role. Pages for “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Dune: Part Two” captured widespread attention, reflecting the global appetite for blockbuster films.

India’s Prominent Presence

Indian readers significantly shaped the rankings. The Indian Premier League (IPL) was the sixth most-visited page, continuing its presence from 2023. The country’s general election also garnered major interest, with over 18 million views, especially around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s re-election in June.

Bollywood made an impact as well, with the film “Kalki 2898 AD” attracting 14.6 million views, cementing India’s cultural influence on the platform.

Sports and Global Events

Sports enthusiasts contributed to the rankings, with the 2024 Summer Olympics, the UEFA Euro Championship, and football icon Cristiano Ronaldo all appearing in the top 25.

Wikipedia’s Global Reach

Since its launch in 2001, Wikipedia has grown into a vast, collaborative resource maintained by over 260,000 volunteer editors. This year alone, the platform saw 31 million edits and nearly 3.5 billion bytes of new information.

The Wikimedia Foundation highlighted that the rankings, compiled from data up to November 22, were carefully screened to exclude spam and bots. A final update of the list will be released in January 2025, cementing this year’s trends and moments of collective curiosity.

These rankings reflect not just popular interests but the stories and events that defined 2024, showcasing Wikipedia’s role as a window into global consciousness.
