Wizkid Claims Title as First Young Nigerian Artist to Achieve Stardom
Afrobeats sensation Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, better known as Wizkid, has made a bold statement claiming he was the first young Nigerian artist to achieve significant fame in the music industry. In a recent interview with Uplift X, Wizkid reflected on his pioneering journey and the role his supportive parents played in his success.
Wizkid expressed gratitude to his parents for their unwavering support, despite their initial doubts about his career in music. “I was the first young artist to ever blow up on the Nigerian music scene,” he said. “My parents didn’t even believe there was a chance for success in that path.”
The singer highlighted the cultural challenges he faced, growing up in a diverse household where his mother was Christian and his father was Muslim. Despite the differences, his parents encouraged him to follow his dreams without imposing restrictions on his personal choices.
“My dad would say, ‘Do whatever you want. If you want to be a Muslim or Christian, you’re free. Do whatever you like,'” Wizkid recalled. “I love my parents so much. Their love and acceptance have been crucial in shaping who I am today.”
In a tribute to his late mother, who passed away on August 18, 2023, Wizkid announced the upcoming release of his new album titled Morayo, named after his mother’s middle name. The album will serve as a heartfelt memorial to her influence and support throughout his career.
