Uzor Arukwe Responds to Criticism Over ‘Simp’ Role in New Movie
Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has addressed the backlash surrounding his portrayal of Odogwu Obiora in Omoni Oboli’s new film, Love In Every Word.
Arukwe’s character, a wealthy Igbo man who lavishes his partner Chioma (played by Bambam) with expensive gifts, has sparked debate, with some viewers accusing the film of portraying Igbo men as “simps.”
While many, particularly female audiences, have praised the movie as a depiction of how men should treat their partners, some male viewers argue that it exaggerates a man’s responsibilities in a relationship.
An X user, @Himp2million, criticized the film, stating:
“Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is liked only by ladies who have always had the illusion of an Odogwu that’ll spend his last dime on them.”
Responding to the comment, Arukwe defended his character’s actions, arguing that taking care of one’s partner is a sign of responsibility, not weakness.
“Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man. How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?” he wrote.
This is not the first time Arukwe has faced criticism over his on-screen roles. In 2023, he was accused of exaggerating his Igbo accent in Funke Akindele’s blockbuster A Tribe Called Judah.
