iPhone Maker Foxconn to Build Electric Vehicles for Mitsubishi Motors

Foxconn, the Taiwanese tech giant best known for manufacturing Apple’s iPhones, has unveiled plans to build electric vehicles (EVs) for Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors in a new push into the global EV market.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), outlining a collaboration in which Foxconn’s EV subsidiary, Foxtron, will design and manufacture a new Mitsubishi-branded electric model in Taiwan. The vehicle is expected to launch by the end of 2025, with availability in Australia and New Zealand projected for the second half of 2026.

While still in its preliminary phase, the agreement marks Foxconn’s most significant step yet into the automotive industry and highlights the growing pressure on legacy carmakers like Mitsubishi, who face increasing competition from Chinese EV manufacturers in global markets such as Southeast Asia, South America, and Europe.

Foxtron is a joint venture between Foxconn and Taiwanese automaker Yulon Motor. The company will oversee the vehicle’s design and production processes under the new arrangement.

“This collaboration reflects our shared ambition to accelerate innovation in the electric vehicle sector,” the companies said in a joint statement. They also emphasized that further discussions are underway to finalize the terms of the deal.

Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics assembler, has made several moves toward entering the automotive space in recent years, including expressing interest in working with Japanese automaker Nissan.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi is part of a broader alliance with Nissan and French manufacturer Renault. The group has been exploring strategic partnerships to remain competitive as Chinese EV makers like BYD continue to expand their global footprint and disrupt traditional automakers with affordable and innovative offerings.

As EV demand surges worldwide, this partnership could serve as a significant foothold for both Foxconn and Mitsubishi in a fast-evolving and fiercely contested industry.
