Tems Makes Billboard History With Seventh Hot 100 Entry
Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, known globally as Tems, has reached another major career milestone, becoming the first African female artist to record seven entries on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The latest achievement follows the unexpected debut of her track What You Need, which entered this week’s Hot 100 at number 93, pushing her total appearances on the chart to seven.
With the new entry, Tems now shares the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 appearances by an African act, tying fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether, who also have seven entries each.
Tems has continued to break new ground since her international breakthrough. In 2022, she made history as the first African artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, thanks to her collaboration with Future and Drake on Wait For U.
Industry watchers expect her to pull ahead of her peers in the coming days, as Bunce Road Blues, a collaboration by J. Cole featuring Tems and Future, is projected to enter the Hot 100 next week.
If confirmed, the new entry would see Tems stand alone as the African artist with the highest number of appearances on the prestigious US singles chart.
