US Targets Gamers to Fill Air Traffic Control Jobs Amid Staffing Shortage
The Federal Aviation Administration has launched a new recruitment drive urging skilled gamers to consider careers in air traffic control, as authorities grapple with a growing workforce shortage.
In a fresh advertising campaign, the agency draws a direct link between gaming skills and the demands of air traffic control, encouraging young people to apply when its hiring window opens next week. The campaign features imagery associated with Xbox alongside scenes of both gamers and professionals working in control towers, with the message: “You’ve been training for this.”
US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the initiative reflects a shift in strategy to connect with a new generation of potential recruits. According to him, many gamers already possess key abilities such as quick decision-making, focus under pressure and technical awareness—skills essential for the role.
The agency is also highlighting the financial incentives, noting that air traffic controllers can earn up to $155,000 annually within three years.
Air traffic control remains a critical function in aviation safety, with controllers responsible for directing aircraft movements and preventing collisions. However, staffing shortages have persisted for years. The FAA previously estimated it needed over 14,600 active controllers to be fully staffed but was short by thousands, with further retirements expected in the coming years.
Labour representatives, including the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, have welcomed the approach, provided that recruitment standards remain strict.
The campaign builds on earlier efforts to attract gamers into the profession and comes at a time of heightened attention on aviation safety following recent high-profile incidents.
Officials say expanding the talent pool is essential to maintaining safe and efficient air travel as demand continues to grow.
