Ubisoft Scales Back ‘Assassin’s Creed Hexe’ Team Ahead Of Planned 2027 Release

French gaming company Ubisoft has reassigned about 50 developers from the upcoming title Assassin’s Creed Hexe, as part of broader changes within the franchise’s development structure.

The move comes shortly after the reported cancellation of an unannounced project codenamed Alterra. Sources indicate that the affected developers have been transferred to Ubisoft’s internal “Interproject” pool – a holding team for staff not currently assigned to a specific game. Developers in this group are typically expected to secure a new role within a limited period or risk redundancy.

The restructuring follows recent leadership changes within the Assassin’s Creed franchise under Jean Guesdon, who has introduced creative adjustments to the project. Among them is the reported removal of a previously planned “cat companion” feature.

Instead, Hexe is expected to adopt a more grounded interpretation of witchcraft, focusing on practical knowledge and early science. The protagonist is said to rely on techniques such as chemical-based tools – like smoke bombs – that create the illusion of supernatural abilities.

The game is currently scheduled for release in June 2027, although industry sources suggest the timeline could shift to later in the year as Ubisoft works to manage costs and refine development.

Hexe is one of several projects in the long-running Assassin’s Creed series currently in development, as Ubisoft continues to expand and evolve one of its flagship gaming franchises.
