Davido Reveals Plan to Reclaim Music Masters Before Retirement

Nigerian music star Davido has disclosed that he intends to regain ownership of his music catalogue from Sony Music as part of his long-term plans for retirement and wealth preservation.

The award-winning singer made the revelation during an appearance on The Long Form Podcast, where he spoke about the importance of ownership and financial planning within the music industry.

According to Davido, while he currently operates under a favourable recording agreement, retaining ownership of creative work remains one of the most valuable assets an artist can have. He explained that he hopes to reacquire his music masters from Sony in the future.

The singer said his goal is to eventually pass on the rights and royalties from portions of his catalogue to his children, creating a source of income that could continue generating revenue for them long after he steps away from music.

Davido noted that the commercial side of the entertainment industry deserves as much attention as the creative aspect, stressing that artists should take ownership and royalty structures seriously when building their careers.

Music masters represent the original recordings of songs and often generate income through streaming, licensing, radio airplay, and other commercial uses. Ownership of these recordings has become a major topic in the global music industry, with many artists seeking greater control over their catalogues and long-term earnings.

The Afrobeats star’s comments highlight a growing trend among musicians who are placing increased emphasis on intellectual property ownership and legacy planning as part of their overall business strategy.
