Adekunle Gold Reveals How He Used to Trek in Lagos Traffic to Sell His Music

Adekunle Gold, the Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter, has opened up about his inspiring journey to success, sharing his struggles and humble beginnings with his fans. In a heartfelt newsletter released alongside his highly-anticipated album “Tequila Ever After” on Friday, July 28, 2023, the artist recounted the determination that drove him forward.

He reminisced about the early days when he and his best friend, Michael, walked from Maryland to Ikeja to sell their CDs in traffic, believing that they had something special to offer the world. Adekunle Gold’s musical passion began as a choir member at his church, but it was when he moved to Ikotun and met Michael that people started taking notice of his exceptional talent.

Their close bond and shared love for music led to the formation of a band called Another Root of Jesse, with Adekunle as the songwriter and Michael as the producer. Despite financial challenges, they persevered, pooling together their resources to shoot their first music video in 2010. Their dedication to the music dream led them to move to a ‘boy’s quarter’ in Lekki in 2011, making sacrifices and pouring every dime into their craft.

Even as Michael secured a job at Dana airline, they remained committed to their passion for music. Adekunle Gold credited his friend as the mastermind behind the EDM remixes performed during his live shows and a producer for some tracks on his newly-released album. Their unwavering friendship and mutual support have been crucial to Adekunle’s rise to fame, proving that true dedication and genuine connections can pave the way to success in the music industry.
