Alexa is Dead as Amazon Shuts Down Popular SEO Ranking Tool

On the heels of its announcement in December 2021, Amazon has shut down its popular website research and SEO analysis tool. Alexa was well known within the digital marketing hub for its Alexa Rank score.

It should be recalled that in December, Amazon had announced that it would shut down the Alexa rank service in May 2022 and for Alexa lovers, the time to say ‘goodbye’ has finally come.

Interestingly, while Alexa Internet did not openly state why the plug was pulled on the Alexa ranking tool, industry experts have alluded to a decline in interest from digital marketers.

Despite being popular, over the years, Alexa rank witnessed a decline in adoption by those for whom it was originally designed; digital marketing experts.

In its prime, Alexa Rank enjoyed its good days such that if the Alexa Rank score of a website was high enough, an SEO expert or brand might consider contacting the site as part of their link-building efforts.

The decline in authority created an SEO site metrics gap, which prompted several software companies to create new tools. Today, there are several SEO tools that digital marketing experts use. Below are some of the most popular alternatives to Alexa Rank.

  • Ahrefs Rank (AR): The Ahrefs Rank shows the strength of a target site’s backlink profile compared to the others in Ahref’s database, with rank #1 being the strongest.

  • Authority Score (AS): SEMRush’s Authority Score measures the overall quality of domain and influence on SEO.

  • Citation Flow (CF): Majestic’s Citation Flow is a score that is weighted by the number citations to a given URL or domain.

  • Domain Authority (DA): Moz’s Domain Authority is a score that predicts how likely a site will rank on search engine results. The score uses a 100-point scale, with higher scores corresponding to greater likelihood of ranking.

  • Domain Rating (DR): Ahref’s Domain Rating shows the strength of a target site’s backlink profile compared to the others in Ahref’s database on a 100-point scale.

  • Page Authority (PA): Moz’s Page Authority is a score that predicts how well a specific page will rank on search engine results. The score uses a 100-point scale, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank.

  • Trust Flow (TF): Majestic’s Trust Flow is a score that is weighted by the number of links from a seed set of trusted sites to a given URL or domain.

  • URL Rating (UR): Ahref’s URL Rating shows the strength of a target page’s link profile on a 100-point scale.

For over two decades, Amazon’s Alexa Rank played a prominent part as a go-to site for website traffic analytics and rankings.
