Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy Dominate Global Smartphone Sales, Claim Entire Top 10 Spots

In a display of dominance, Apple and Samsung have emerged as the top-selling smartphone manufacturers in the first quarter of 2024, completely monopolizing Counterpoint’s latest global top 10 list. Notably, iPhones secured four of the top five positions, yielding only the fifth spot to Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra. Leading the pack is the iPhone 15 Pro Max, marking the first instance of a Pro Max variant reaching the pinnacle in a non-seasonal quarter.

Samsung’s Galaxy A15 5G secured the sixth position, closely trailed by the Galaxy A54. Apple’s iPhone 15 Plus clinched the eighth spot, while Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and Galaxy A32 rounded out the top 10 in ninth and tenth place, respectively.

The exclusivity of 5G-capable devices in the top 10 list underscores a significant trend, reflecting consumers’ increasing preference for premium smartphones. Notably, seven out of the top 10 devices command a wholesale price of at least $600, indicating a shift towards high-end offerings.

The robust performance of all four iPhone 15 models is particularly noteworthy, with three of them achieving podium positions. The Pro lineup notably contributed to half of Apple’s total sales in the quarter, a substantial increase from the previous year. This underscores Apple’s successful differentiation strategy, which emphasizes premium features such as advanced processors and enhanced camera systems.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 lineup also demonstrated impressive sales figures, attributed to the series’ early refresh and the incorporation of innovative generative AI features. However, the appetite for premium smartphones has also led to a longer ownership cycle, as consumers are holding onto their devices for extended periods before upgrading. This, coupled with a slowdown in smartphone innovation and market saturation, presents both challenges and opportunities for manufacturers in the fiercely competitive smartphone landscape.
