Apple Unveils iPhone 16e, a Cheaper Alternative to the iPhone 16
Apple has expanded its smartphone lineup with the introduction of the iPhone 16e, a more affordable version of the iPhone 16. Announced on Wednesday, the new device marks a strategic move by Apple to strengthen its position in the budget smartphone market while making its AI-driven features more accessible to a wider audience.
Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e will officially launch on February 28. It is also the first iPhone to feature a cellular modem designed in-house by Apple, further reducing the company’s reliance on external chip suppliers.
A Shift in Apple’s Budget Strategy
With the iPhone 16e, Apple appears to be moving away from its long-standing budget model, the iPhone SE. First introduced in 2016 and last updated in 2022, the iPhone SE struggled to gain significant market traction, accounting for only 5% of U.S. iPhone sales as of December 2024, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.
Unlike the iPhone SE, which retained the classic home button and older design, the iPhone 16e adopts a more modern look and feel. It shares many similarities with the standard iPhone 16, including a 6.1-inch display, Face ID, a 48-megapixel camera, and the Action Button for customizable shortcuts. However, it omits a second camera lens and the Camera Control button found on the more expensive model.

Performance and Apple Intelligence Integration
The iPhone 16e is powered by the same processor as the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup, ensuring it can support Apple Intelligence – Apple’s suite of AI-powered tools. This move is significant as it broadens access to Apple’s artificial intelligence features, which had previously been limited to high-end models like the iPhone 15 Pro and certain iPads and Macs.
Apple Intelligence includes AI-driven capabilities such as emoji and image generation, notification summaries, and the ability to remove objects from photos. It also integrates ChatGPT into Siri, allowing for more advanced conversational interactions.
The Competitive Landscape
Apple’s decision to introduce an AI-capable budget iPhone comes at a time when competition in both the smartphone and AI sectors is intensifying. Google’s Pixel A-series has been a strong contender in the affordable smartphone market, offering AI-powered features at competitive prices. Meanwhile, both Google and Samsung have been aggressively rolling out AI enhancements to their devices over the past year.
Apple’s delayed entry into consumer-facing AI has been noted by industry analysts, particularly as rivals like Microsoft and Google have embraced generative AI technologies more rapidly. However, by incorporating Apple Intelligence into the iPhone 16e, Apple is signalling that AI will be a central component of its future product lineup.
Will AI Drive iPhone Sales?
While Apple Intelligence may enhance user experience, it remains unclear whether AI-driven features will be enough to spur iPhone upgrades at a time when Apple’s smartphone revenue is under pressure. In its fiscal first quarter of 2025, Apple’s iPhone sales fell short of Wall Street expectations, raising questions about whether new AI capabilities will be a strong enough selling point.
With the launch of the iPhone 16e, Apple is making a clear push to expand its reach in the budget market while ensuring its AI technology is available to a broader customer base. Whether this strategy will translate into increased sales remains to be seen.
