‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Tops $180 Million Worldwide

Covid rampaging through China and domestic audiences buying advance tickets for next week is reducing opening weekend numbers for James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, but the film is still dominating box office with $180 million worldwide through Friday on its way toward a $400-450 million bow.

The figures, while lower than the original $500-600 million predictions, are still enormous, and the mitigating factors suggest the Avatar sequel will see strong daily and weekly holds through the holiday season.

In particular, nearly a quarter of advance ticket sales in North America were for post-opening weekend screenings, meaning audiences are aware screenings will be packed in early days and so viewers are choosing to wait in order to secure the best seats and premium theater options.

It remains to be seen whether Saturday and Sunday business — when family audiences will start flooding theaters for The Way of Water, after opening days were dominated by non-family viewership — winds up on the higher end of expectations.

In actual total box office, Avatar: The Way of Water has taken approximately $220+/- million as of this morning in all worldwide markets. So it’s not at all impossible it could still climb toward $500 million, although it’s a bit of a harder climb at this point.

But for now, expectations are for a $150+/- million domestic debut and $450+/- million global cume through Sunday close of business.
