Biggie, Jay-Z and Stephen A. Smith

Biggie ‘Would be’ Jay-Z If He Were Still Alive, Says Stephen A. Smith

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith stirred up debate on the Connect the Dots podcast when he weighed in on the rap game’s greatest of all time (GOAT) discussion, suggesting that the late Notorious B.I.G. could have rivalled JAY-Z if he were still alive.

During a bracket challenge on the podcast, Smith compared eight legendary MCs, ultimately pitting Biggie against Eminem in the semifinals. Smith asserted, “If Biggie were alive today, I think he could be Hov. I’m not sure though, but I will tell you that his lyrics, along with his music, the sound of it…I would say to you I gotta give it to Biggie.”

However, in the finals, Smith ultimately crowned JAY-Z as the GOAT. Explaining his choice, he praised JAY-Z’s longevity and depth of content, stating, “Biggie was something special, make no mistake about it, rapping about what he knows. JAY-Z knows more. Jay is more seasoned, so he had more to say.”

Despite his admiration for JAY-Z, Smith revealed a past disagreement with the rap mogul regarding comments he made about Beyoncé and Rihanna’s talents. Smith recounted how JAY-Z, protective of his family and friends, reached out to him after he sparked controversy with his remarks. Reflecting on the incident, Smith emphasized the professional respect and understanding between them.

Smith’s insights have sparked discussions among hip-hop fans, reigniting the perennial debate over the greatest MCs in the genre’s history.
