British Rapper, Stormzy Banned From Driving in the UK
Renowned British rapper Stormzy has been banned from driving for nine months following his admission to using a mobile phone while behind the wheel of his Rolls-Royce.
The decision was handed down by Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where District Judge Andrew Sweet described the artist’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible.” The incident occurred on March 7, 2024, in West Kensington, London, after an off-duty police officer spotted Stormzy using the device while driving.
In a letter to the court, Stormzy pleaded guilty to the offense. Judge Sweet noted that the rapper’s driving record was already concerning, with six points previously accumulated for a speeding violation.
As part of the sentencing, Stormzy was fined £2,010 ($2,498), and six penalty points were added to his licence, bringing his total to 12 – enough to trigger an automatic disqualification under UK traffic laws, which stipulate that drivers with 12 or more penalty points within three years face suspension.
Stormzy, one of the UK’s most prominent musical figures, has yet to publicly comment on the ruling. The ban serves as a reminder of the strict regulations surrounding mobile phone use while driving in the UK, aimed at reducing accidents caused by driver distraction.
