Bun B’s Home Invader Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison
The man who attempted to rob rapper Bun B’s Houston home in April 2019 has been sentenced to 40 years in prison. Demonte Jackson was handed the sentence on Friday, June 7, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and engaging in organized crime.
Jackson, who pleaded guilty to the charges, will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years. During the trial, Jackson claimed to be suffering from mental health issues, a point supported by his grandmother’s testimony. His attorney also noted that Jackson would receive mental health treatment while incarcerated.
Bun B, whose real name is Bernard Freeman, took the stand two days prior to the sentencing to describe the lasting impact of the attempted home invasion on his and his wife’s lives. “This was an entirely new traumatizing incident. This is something we still deal with to this day,” he said. The rapper became emotional as he described how his wife, Angela “Queenie” Walls, has been severely affected by the ordeal. “There are times when she gets closed off. She can’t communicate, and I just get so angry all over again because she didn’t deserve this,” Bun B said, holding back tears.
The traumatic event unfolded when Queenie answered the door, expecting a delivery driver, only to be confronted by a masked and armed Jackson. Bun B recounted hearing the commotion from another floor and grabbing his gun. Despite his wife’s pleas for him not to come downstairs, fearing for her life, Bun B confronted Jackson.
Jackson, who had made his way to the garage, was shot in the shoulder by Bun B after the rapper fired multiple shots. The two exchanged gunfire and wrestled on the garage floor before Jackson managed to escape. Bun B chased Jackson and removed his mask, wanting to identify the man who had terrorized his wife.
Jackson’s sentencing brings some closure to the harrowing incident, although the emotional scars for Bun B and his wife remain.
