Busta Rhymes, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole

Busta Rhymes Reflects on Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole’s Lyrical Prowess, Says: “I’m Torn”

In a recent appearance on Amazon’s +44 podcast, renowned rapper Busta Rhymes opened up about his admiration for fellow artists, delving into a battle between Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole.

When asked to share his Top 5 MCs, Busta found himself in a dilemma over Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. He expressed his struggle, saying, “I’m almost there with J. Cole. He’s definitely one of the major new candidates. But I’m still torn between him and Kendrick.”

Busta praised Kendrick Lamar for his exceptional lyricism, referencing the famous “Control” verse, which he described as nothing but “straight bars.” Reflecting on Kendrick’s impact, he noted, “I think that’s a testament to how serious what he is able to do at will. Because a lot of the times I think people get misconstrued with the fact that he is so brilliant and he’s so broad with his range creatively that you forget that he’ll spank your ass on his leisure time.”

Busta continued to highlight Kendrick’s unique approach, emphasizing that Kendrick doesn’t often engage in features and can remain quiet for extended periods before dropping an album that stands out. “So I just think in that sense, Kendrick is a real different type of problem and force to be reckoned with.”

Shifting his attention to J. Cole, Busta acknowledged the attention Cole has gained recently, particularly through diverse features, showcasing his ability to navigate different styles seamlessly. “He’s moving and shaking in that space with grace. And he’s making sure you understand that he ain’t got no problem with chopping your head off, too.”

Expressing his dilemma, Busta concluded, “Because I feel like if Kendrick was to get active in the same way that Cole is being active, it would be a way different conversation.”

This isn’t the first time Busta has praised J. Cole, as he previously expressed his desire to collaborate with the North Carolinian artist in an appearance on The Breakfast Club. As for Busta’s Top 5, he revealed it consists of Rakim, Nas, Eminem, JAY-Z, and The Notorious B.I.G.
