Seun Kuti Will Play Fela in Izu Ojukwu’s ’77: The Festac Conspiracy’

Nigerian musician Seun Kuti is taking on an iconic role in the world of cinema as he steps into the shoes of his legendary grandfather, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, in Izu Ojukwu’s upcoming film, “77: The Festac Conspiracy.”

Seun Kuti is set to portray the dynamic character of Fela, the renowned Nigerian musician and activist, in this historical drama. Recently released images from the production by What Kept Me Up showcase Seun Kuti’s electrifying performance, promising an engaging portrayal that extends beyond the realm of music to capture the intensity of his grandfather’s role during that era.

Scripted by Olisa Eloka for Adonis Production, “77: The Festac Conspiracy” delves into the life of a disgruntled ex-serviceman who receives an invitation to join a movement aimed at challenging the political status quo on the African continent. The film’s art direction, handled by Pat Nebo, further hints at the rich cultural tapestry that it weaves.

Set against the backdrop of a significant historical event that unfolded from January 15 to February 12, 1977, in Lagos, Nigeria, the movie boasts a talented cast that includes Ramsey Nouah, Rita Dominic, Daniel K Daniel, Ibinabo Fibresima, and Soibifaa Dokubo.

“77: The Festac Conspiracy” marks Seun Kuti’s second foray into acting, following his debut in the action thriller “No Man’s Land.” While the production has advanced to the post-production stage, an official release date for the film has not yet been announced, leaving eager audiences awaiting the opportunity to witness Seun Kuti’s transformation into the iconic Fela Anikulapo Kuti on the big screen.
