ChatGPT Becomes Fastest App Ever to Reach One Billion Monthly Users

ChatGPT has become the fastest application in history to reach one billion monthly active users, achieving the milestone just three and a half years after its launch in November 2022.

According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, the OpenAI chatbot surpassed the previous record held by Google Maps, which took approximately five years to reach the same level of monthly usage.

The achievement highlights the continued growth of generative artificial intelligence despite ongoing debates about its impact on society, employment and privacy.

Sensor Tower’s report also showed that other AI-powered applications are experiencing rapid growth. Monthly users of Anthropic’s Claude and Meta AI reportedly increased by 640 percent and 973 percent year-on-year, respectively. While ChatGPT’s growth rate was lower at 62 percent, it remains the most widely used AI application by a significant margin.

Abe Yousef, Senior Insights Analyst at Sensor Tower, attributed the expansion of AI adoption to continuous improvements in AI models and a more favorable perception of the technology among consumers.

The report comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI companies and their relationships with government agencies.

Earlier this year, OpenAI was among several technology firms that entered into agreements with the Pentagon. The move triggered criticism from some users, prompting OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman to announce additional safeguards aimed at preventing the technology from being used for domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens.

Sensor Tower noted that ChatGPT experienced a sharp increase in app removals following the announcement. According to the report, uninstallations rose by approximately 295 percent day-over-day on February 28, one day after the Pentagon partnership became public.

The backlash also coincided with a surge in popularity for rival AI platform Claude, which briefly became the top-ranked free application on Apple’s App Store.

Anthropic has publicly stated that it does not permit its AI systems to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. However, reports have recently suggested that the U.S. National Security Agency has used one of the company’s models, Claude Mythos, for offensive cyber operations.

Despite concerns surrounding artificial intelligence, adoption continues to grow rapidly. Industry observers note that public skepticism about AI has increased even as usage reaches record levels.

The technology remains at the center of debates over job displacement, energy consumption and the expansion of data center infrastructure. Opposition to new data center projects has intensified in several regions as demand for AI computing power continues to rise.

Meanwhile, OpenAI recently published a report alleging that some users in China were attempting to amplify anti-data-center sentiment in the United States. The company acknowledged that such efforts had minimal impact but argued that they represented attempts to influence public discussions surrounding AI infrastructure.

As competition among AI companies intensifies, ChatGPT’s latest milestone further cements its position as the dominant player in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence market.
