Apple and Google are Working Together to Limit AirTag Stalking

Apple and Google have announced that they are collaborating on an industry specification aimed at combating safety risks associated with Bluetooth-enabled tracking devices like AirTags.

The proposed standard requires the implementation of “unauthorized tracking detection and alerts” across Android and iOS devices.

The new specification lists several best practices for creators of Bluetooth tracking devices to help prevent misuse that puts users at risk of stalking, harassment, and theft.

The unwanted tracking detection should detect and alert individuals when a tracker that’s separated from its owner is traveling with them, along with instructions on how to find and disable the device.

Other companies that make similar tracking devices, such as Tile, Chipolo, Eufy Security, Samsung, and Pebblebee, have also agreed to the proposed standard.

The release of Apple’s AirTag in 2021 raised concerns among privacy advocates. To address these issues, Apple improved its unknown AirTag alerts on iPhone and created an app that scans for unwanted trackers on Android.

The new specification builds upon these protections and results from the collaboration between Apple and Google.
