China Blocks Access to OnlyFans After Brief Accessibility

Popular subscription-based platform OnlyFans, widely known for hosting sexually explicit content, is no longer accessible in China after briefly working in recent weeks.

The development follows reports on social media platform X in late November that OnlyFans was functioning within the country. These claims were subsequently verified by CNN checks at the time.

China, which enforces strict online censorship, typically blocks access to thousands of foreign websites, especially those hosting pornography, which is illegal under its laws. The government maintains a zero-tolerance stance towards sexually explicit material as part of its broader internet regulations.

News of OnlyFans’ accessibility had sparked online discussions earlier this month. On Weibo, China’s popular microblogging platform, some users jokingly framed the situation as a creative solution to the country’s youth unemployment crisis. Suggestions were made that graduates facing limited job opportunities could turn to the platform for income.

One user quipped, “Isn’t this another measure to provide employment?” while another commented, “This is a good company that gives creators 90% of the income! Isn’t it better than actual work?”

China’s youth unemployment remains a significant concern, with official figures placing the jobless rate for individuals aged 16 to 24, excluding students, at 17.1% in October. This marks a slight improvement from previous record highs but still reflects a challenging labour market.

Although primarily known for adult content, OnlyFans also accommodates creators who share fitness tutorials, music, and other forms of entertainment. In 2023, the platform launched a separate streaming service free of sexually explicit content, offering sports and comedy-oriented programming.

The reimposition of the ban underscores Beijing’s continued efforts to regulate digital spaces and enforce its stringent content policies.
