CKay Calls Out Colleagues for Copying His Sound After Mocking Him
Nigerian singer CKay has criticized some of his colleagues in the music industry, claiming they once ridiculed his unique approach to Afrobeats but are now imitating his style.
The “Love Nwantiti” star took to his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration, asserting that he pioneered trends that many Afrobeats artists now benefit from. CKay recalled how he was mocked for promoting his songs on TikTok and introducing the “emo-afrobeat” genre, only for others to follow suit.
“History can’t be rewritten just because some people got paid to rewrite it… I’ll always be here to remind you,” CKay wrote. “I pioneered many vibes Afrobeats artistes thrive off today… Y’all laughed when I came up with emo-afrobeat and was on TikTok all day, but many are now doing the same thing, calling it ridiculous names (and making money). You’re welcome.”
CKay’s comments highlight the evolving nature of the Afrobeats genre and underscore the growing influence of social media platforms like TikTok in shaping musical trends. His statement also sheds light on the challenges artists face when introducing new sounds to a skeptical audience, only for those same innovations to later become mainstream.
