Davido Claims Former President Goodluck Jonathan Used His Hit Song as Ringtone
Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that his breakout hit, Dami Duro, was once the ringtone of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Afrobeats sensation made the disclosure during a recent interview on Power 105.1 FM in the United States, reflecting on his early music journey and how the success of the 2012 track helped mend strained ties with his father, billionaire businessman Deji Adeleke.
According to Davido, his father had initially disapproved of his decision to pursue a music career and went as far as using security forces to disrupt his performances. However, the massive popularity of Dami Duro – which he said even reached the ears of the president – changed everything.
“Before then, my dad was using police and soldiers to shut down my shows and arrest promoters,” Davido recounted. “But when Dami Duro blew up – someone told me it was even the president’s ringtone – things changed. People started encouraging him to support me.”
He added that the turning point in their relationship came after that success, with both father and son reaching a new understanding.
“I agreed to go back to school and told him he didn’t have to chase me around anymore. I admitted I should’ve just spoken to him, but I was scared. I was a kid. Now, we’re best friends. He comes to my shows and is actively involved in my business.”
Released in 2012, Dami Duro was one of the songs that helped establish Davido as a force in the Afrobeats scene. Over a decade later, he remains one of Africa’s biggest music exports.
