This achievement marks Doja Cat’s second chart-topping single, following her 2020 sensation “Say So” featuring Nicki Minaj.
Billboard’s most recent data reveals the impressive reach of “Paint the Town Red,” with 32.1 million radio airplay audience impressions, 27.7 million streams, and 8,000 downloads.
Earlier this year, Doja Cat embarked on a significant musical shift, publicly renouncing her pop star title in favour of refining her rap skills. In April, she took to Twitter to announce her intentions to pivot her musical direction.
“No more pop,” she tweeted. “I also agree with everyone who said the majority of my rap verses are mid and corny.”
She further elaborated, stating, “I know they are. I wasn’t trying to prove anything; I just enjoy making music, but I’m getting tired of hearing y’all say that I can’t, so I will.”
When asked about the inspiration behind this transformative move, with some fans speculating that criticism may have played a role, she candidly confessed, “Pop isn’t exciting to me anymore. I don’t wanna make it.”
