Early Detection of Cancer Would’ve Saved Sound Sultan – 2Face

Popular Nigerian music icon, 2Face, has voiced his belief that an early diagnosis could have potentially saved the life of his late friend and fellow musician, Sound Sultan. The late singer, whose real name was Olanrewaju Fasasi, tragically succumbed to throat cancer in 2021, sparking a heartfelt conversation about the importance of early detection and the challenges of healthcare in Nigeria.

In a candid interview on the Afrobeats podcast hosted by British-Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide, also known as Shopsydoo, 2Face reflected on his friendship with Sound Sultan and the profound impact of his untimely passing. The veteran musician expressed deep admiration for Sound Sultan, describing him as one of the “goodest” individuals one could encounter, almost like an angel.

During the interview, Shopsydoo inquired about the relationship between the two artists and the impact of Sound Sultan’s passing on 2Face. The response shed light on the regret and sorrow felt due to the late diagnosis that prevented timely intervention for Sound Sultan’s illness.

2Face candidly shared, “For a long time, I did not want to accept that fact, it was like a joke. The diagnosis was late. We thought it was malaria, he did tests in Nigeria. But I don’t want to get into all that.”

Sound Sultan’s passing was a sombre moment for the music community and fans worldwide. His battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a form of cancer affecting the throat, underscored the challenges of accessing timely and accurate healthcare, particularly in a country with systemic healthcare limitations.

2Face’s candid admission about the belief that early diagnosis could have made a difference highlights the broader issue of healthcare infrastructure and awareness in Nigeria. The lack of adequate medical facilities and the need for improved diagnostic and treatment options have been ongoing concerns.

The loss of Sound Sultan served as a stark reminder of the urgency of addressing these issues to ensure that individuals receive proper medical attention and diagnoses in a timely manner. The legacy of Sound Sultan lives on not only through his music but also through the conversations he continues to inspire about the state of healthcare and the importance of early detection.

As the interview continues to resonate with fans and followers, it serves as a call to action for improved healthcare accessibility and awareness to prevent such tragic losses in the future.
