Elon Musk To Restore Blind Person’s Sight With Brain Chip This Year

Elon Musk has revealed that Neuralink, his brain-chip company, plans to implant a device designed to restore vision in blind individuals for the first time later this year.

Speaking at an event in Wisconsin, Musk announced that the chip, called Blindsight, had shown promising results in animal trials, with test subjects remaining healthy after implantation. He expressed optimism about the upcoming human trials, though he tempered expectations about the initial results.

“We’re hoping later this year to do our first device implant for a human, enabling someone who is completely blind to see. It will be low-resolution at first, so I want to set expectations accordingly,” Musk stated.

Over time, he envisions the technology evolving to provide superhuman vision, surpassing natural eyesight capabilities.

Breakthrough in Brain Chip Technology

Neuralink has been developing brain-interface technology for years, previously conducting clinical trials on patients with mobility impairments. In January 2024, the company successfully implanted its first brain chip, allowing three individuals to regain control over body parts they had previously been unable to move.

The announcement follows Neuralink’s recent trademark filings for terms including “Blindsight,” “telepathy,” and “telekinesis”, hinting at broader ambitions for brain-chip applications.

What’s Next?
Neuralink has not yet provided a timeline for mass rollout, as further testing and regulatory approvals will be required before the technology becomes widely available. However, the company remains committed to advancing its brain-interface technology to improve human capabilities and restore lost functions.
