FBI Arrests 22 Nigerians Linked to Sextortion Scams
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced the arrest of 22 Nigerians in connection with widespread sextortion schemes that have contributed to the deaths of over 20 teenage boys in the United States since 2021.
The arrests stemmed from Operation Artemis, an extensive international operation involving agencies from Nigeria, the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The nearly two-year investigation focused on dismantling online networks that preyed on teenage boys across various social media platforms.
In a statement published on its website, the FBI revealed that the suspects typically posed as young women online, persuading victims to share sexually explicit images. Once obtained, the images were used to blackmail the victims, threatening to release the content publicly unless payments were made. In many cases, even after victims complied, the extortion persisted, driving some to tragic ends.
Special Agent Karen R., who oversaw the FBI’s efforts in the operation, stressed the severity of the crimes, stating, “This is not a victimless crime. These are real children suffering real consequences.”
The FBI emphasized that the arrests represent a significant step in curbing a growing and deadly threat against vulnerable teenagers online.
