GM Halts Chevy Blazer EV Sales Due to Software Glitches

General Motors (GM) has temporarily suspended sales of its recently launched Chevy Blazer EV due to reported software-related issues encountered by some customers. Scott Bell, Vice President of Global Chevrolet, emphasized that addressing customer satisfaction remains the company’s top priority, leading to a brief pause in new deliveries.

The automaker assured the public that the software problems are not safety-related and do not involve the Ultium propulsion system or Google Built-In. GM is actively working to resolve the software issues promptly and affected Blazer EV owners will be requested to visit dealerships for a necessary software update.

Launched just a few weeks ago, the Blazer EV represents a significant addition to GM’s electric vehicle lineup, positioning itself as a mass-market SUV. Despite the setback, GM remains committed to its electric vehicle goals, having recently introduced the GMC Hummer EV electric truck and commenced production of the Cadillac Lyriq electric luxury SUV.

In anticipation of resolving the software concerns, GM plans to resume sales after the necessary software updates have been implemented. The voluntary pause aligns with the company’s dedication to delivering a high-quality experience for Blazer EV owners.

Additionally, GM faces challenges related to US electric vehicle tax credits. Starting January 1, the Blazer EV is expected to become temporarily ineligible for these credits due to new rules imposed by the US Treasury Department. The regulations disqualify electric vehicles using specific battery components from China. GM has affirmed its commitment to comply with these guidelines by adjusting its sourcing practices by early January.

This move by GM comes in the wake of Tesla’s recent recalls, with more than 120,000 vehicles affected due to software issues that could potentially cause unlocked doors during a crash, posing a safety risk. The automotive industry is grappling with the complexities of software integration as vehicles become increasingly connected and reliant on sophisticated technology.
