Billionaire Len Blavatnik Suspends Harvard Donations

Renowned billionaire Len Blavatnik has decided to suspend donations to Harvard University through his family foundation, following what is described as President Claudine Gay’s problematic testimony before Congress. The move comes as Blavatnik urges Harvard to address concerns related to antisemitism on campus, with a specific focus on ensuring the protection of Jewish students.

Blavatnik, a Harvard Business School graduate with an estimated fortune of $32 billion, has a history of generous contributions to both Harvard and various Jewish causes. His family foundation has previously donated at least $270 million to Harvard.

While Blavatnik has not issued specific demands, sources indicate that he expects the university to ensure the equal protection of Jewish students compared to their peers. Unlike some donors who have completely severed ties with Harvard, Blavatnik leaves the door open for a potential resumption of donations, expressing a desire for the university to improve its approach.

This decision is a significant setback for Harvard, given Blavatnik’s previous commitment to donate a record-setting $200 million to Harvard Medical School in 2018. The broader context involves a growing backlash against Harvard and other universities over their responses to events, particularly related to the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.

Harvard has faced criticism for its handling of antisemitism, and President Claudine Gay has come under scrutiny for plagiarism. Despite a virtual town hall with faculty members and expressions of support, the university continues to grapple with controversies and challenges in maintaining donor relationships.
