Apple Unveils iOS 17.3 Beta with Anti-Theft Feature to Safeguard iPhones

As concerns over iPhone thefts and subsequent identity thefts persist, Apple has introduced a new security feature in the upcoming iOS 17.3 beta. The anti-theft feature, known as Stolen Device Protection, aims to enhance the security of iPhones by restricting certain functions behind Face ID or Touch ID, providing an extra layer of defence against potential thieves who may have access to the device’s passcode.

The move comes in response to a previous Wall Street Journal report highlighting the vulnerability of iPhones when thieves obtain passcodes, potentially leading to unauthorized access to Apple accounts and financial apps like Apple Pay and Apple Card.

Currently in the public preview stage, the iOS 17.3 beta is expected to be officially released in January or February. Stolen Device Protection activates when the iPhone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. The feature prevents a thief armed with the passcode from accessing critical functions, including iCloud Keychain, Apple Card applications, and disabling Lost Mode.

Moreover, the new security measure introduces a delay in changing credentials or turning off Find My iPhone, requiring two biometric checks with an hour-long interval. While acknowledging that determined criminals might find workarounds, the feature aims to serve as a deterrent to opportunistic thieves.

In addition to Stolen Device Protection, the iOS 17.3 beta brings back Collaborative Apple Music Playlists, a feature previously glimpsed in the iOS 17.2 beta but excluded from the public release. This functionality allows users to invite friends and family members to contribute song suggestions to shared playlists.
