Gray Zone Warfare Officially Becomes an Open-World Extraction Shooter

Gray Zone Warfare, originally described as an intense tactical FPS, has now fully embraced its identity as an open-world extraction shooter, according to its developers at MADFINGER Games.

Since its release in April 2024, the game has undergone significant changes, with updates enhancing its realism, challenge, and player engagement. Initially, it featured extraction elements, but over time, the developers pivoted towards a more defined extraction shooter experience.

By the end of 2024, the game’s Steam description was updated to reflect this shift, solidifying its position as the first-ever open-world extraction shooter. This transformation was confirmed in a recent discussion with Rick Lagnese, PR and Communications Director at MADFINGER Games, who stated that the studio is now committed to redefining the extraction shooter genre.

Speaking at Gamescom 2024, MADFINGER CEO Marek Rabas emphasized the studio’s long-term vision for the game. Unlike many other extraction shooters that have struggled to maintain momentum, Gray Zone Warfare has continued to evolve, backed by a dedicated community and a promising roadmap for 2025.

With major updates on the horizon, players can expect new challenges and gameplay enhancements aimed at reshaping the extraction shooter landscape. Fans of the genre looking for an immersive, tactical experience may find that now is the perfect time to jump into Gray Zone Warfare.
