Ajax Unveils Special 125th Anniversary Kit Inspired by Club’s Historic Look
Dutch football giants Ajax have unveiled a special edition anniversary kit in collaboration with adidas to mark the club’s 125th anniversary. The design pays homage to Ajax’s first-ever white-red-white kit, originally worn during the 1911/12 season.
A Tribute to Ajax’s First Iconic Look
The long-sleeved jersey features a classic buttoned collar, the Amsterdam flag on the chest, and a red central stripe reminiscent of the club’s early days. The look is completed with all-white shorts and black socks with red cuffs, reflecting the traditional design elements from over a century ago.
The inspiration comes from a historic team photo taken on September 10, 1911, after Ajax won the Gouden Kruis (Golden Cross) tournament final against Volharding. This image is believed to be the earliest recorded instance of Ajax wearing the now-famous white-red-white colors.
A Journey Through Ajax’s Kit Evolution
When Ajax was founded in 1900, the club initially played in an all-black kit, later switching to a white-and-red striped uniform. However, following their promotion to the Dutch First Division, league regulations required teams to have unique kits. As a result, Ajax adopted the white-red-white design from Amsterdam club V.V.V. (Veni Vidi Vici), whose football department had recently disbanded.
The new anniversary kit also replicates details from Ajax’s historic uniforms, such as the sleeve variations on the socks—offering both all-red and red with white stripe options. Additionally, a special white label on the jersey features the Ajax logo, adidas Originals logo, the club’s founding date (March 18, 1900), and the inscription “AFC Ajax 125.” The logos of main sponsors adidas, Ziggo, and ABN AMRO (Ajax Women) are displayed in red on the jersey’s central stripe, blending seamlessly with the classic design.
Debut Against AZ and Special Matches
Ajax’s men’s and women’s teams will wear the anniversary kit for one match each. The men will debut it on Sunday, March 16, against AZ, while the women will wear it on Sunday, March 30, against ADO Den Haag. Additionally, Ajax Legends will don the kit during the Beckenbauer Cup on March 17, celebrating Bayern Munich’s 125th anniversary.
To preserve the authentic 1911 look, the jerseys worn during these matches will not feature commercial sponsorships, with the Eredivisie, Vriendenloterij, and Team Rockstars IT waiving their sleeve positions for this special occasion.
Limited-Edition Release
The 125th anniversary kit is available in men’s, women’s, and kids’ sizes, while the shorts and socks will be sold in adult sizes only. Ajax has also released a special anniversary collection, featuring a burgundy red track jacket and track pants with commemorative detailing—paying tribute to both Ajax’s historic colors and Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.
