Grizzlies Will be Without Ja Morant Longer Than Expected as Gun Dilemma Worsens

Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said Sunday that Ja Morant has “no definitive timeline” for his return following the guard’s Instagram video in which he brandishes a gun at a nightclub.

As reported on MARCA, Morant, 23, was initially expected to miss just two games, but now Jenkins changed the tone in his pregame press conference prior to facing the Los Angeles Clippers.

“We’re taking it one day at a time,” Jenkins said. “There’s no definitive timeline… It’s really not a timetable situation.”

Jenkins, 38, didn’t divulge the exact details regarding his conversations with Morant, though he did admit they were trying to get him to understand that he has responsibilities as a team leader.

Morant has had several incidents involving the use of a deadly weapon, including a lawsuit claiming he punched a teenager before threatening him with a pistol.

Ja Morant Could Face a League Suspension

NBA commissioner Adam Silver is investigating the incident and Morant could face a lengthy suspension should the league find he infringed their rules.

If Morant carried the firearm onto the team airplane, which is strictly against league policy, he could be gone for at least 50 games.

Morant released a statement Saturday apologizing for his actions and saying he would take all the time necessary to grow from this situation.

“I’m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire organization for letting you down,” the statement read. “I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”
