Henry Kissinger, Influential Former US Secretary of State, Dies at 100

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, a pivotal figure in US foreign policy during the Cold War era, has passed away at the age of 100. The renowned diplomat, who played a crucial role in shaping America’s global stance during the Nixon and Ford administrations, died at his Connecticut residence.

Born in Germany in 1923, Kissinger fled the Nazis with his family in 1938, eventually becoming a US citizen in 1943. His extensive career included serving in the US Army, teaching international relations at Harvard, and holding key positions in the Nixon and Ford administrations.

While leading the US through the Vietnam War’s conclusion and fostering relations with China, Kissinger left an indelible mark on American diplomacy. His efforts contributed to the end of hostilities in the 1973 Yom Kippur War and introduced the concept of shuttle diplomacy.

Kissinger’s influence extended beyond his official tenure, providing counsel to numerous leaders for decades. Former President George W Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair were among those who paid tribute to his legacy.

Despite his diplomatic achievements, Kissinger faced criticism for policies linked to human rights abuses and repressive regimes. Over the years, Rolling Stone and Huffpost, among others, have criticized his actions. However, Kissinger remained dismissive of such critiques.

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, Kissinger continued his prolific commentary on public affairs after leaving government service in 1977. His counsel was sought by multiple US presidents, and he maintained connections with Chinese leaders from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping.

Even in his centennial year, Kissinger remained active, making a surprise visit to Beijing in July 2022 to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving an enduring impact on US foreign policy. Henry Kissinger is survived by his wife, Nancy Maginnes Kissinger, two children, Elizabeth and David, and five grandchildren.
