How NFF Officials Killed My Football Career – Singer, Crayon

Renowned musician Charles Chibuezechukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has opened up about a distressing incident that led to the abrupt end of his football aspirations. In an exclusive interview with Cool FM Nigeria in Lagos, the artist shared how officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) derailed his football career by sidelining him from a national team selection, favouring an individual with financial influence.

Crayon, known for hits like ‘Trench To Triumph,’ recounted that in 2015, he was chosen to be part of a national youth team. However, his dreams were shattered when certain corrupt officials within the NFF opted to replace him with a candidate from a wealthier background.

This disillusioning experience not only marked the end of his football ambitions but also played a role in triggering a bout of depression in 2015. The artist lamented how he was left directionless, unable to secure admission into a university like his friends who had all embarked on higher education journeys.

The musician revealed, “I became depressed in 2015 because I couldn’t get into the university. All my friends were in school. At that time I was really close to my friends. I was the youngest among my friends… Then they all got admitted to the universities in Ghana, Benin, etc. I was just me in the hood. It was so boring. I didn’t have anything to do, nowhere to go.”

He further disclosed that football had been a significant part of his life, and he had aspired to become a professional player. Acknowledging his prowess on the field, he mentioned that he was fondly referred to as “Coutinho” after the renowned Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho.

Despite his talent and enthusiasm, Crayon’s football journey was hampered by the corruption and challenges endemic in Nigeria’s football landscape. He refrained from naming the specific individuals involved but alluded to influential figures within the NFF.

The pivotal moment that marked his disillusionment occurred during a screening session at the Surulere National Stadium. Crayon detailed how he was initially selected by NFF officials for a spot but was later replaced by someone with financial clout and connections. This incident left him devastated and disheartened, ultimately contributing to the depression he experienced.

Crayon’s candid account serves as a reminder of the obstacles that aspiring athletes and talents face in a system affected by corruption and favoritism. His story resonates as a cautionary tale about the need for transparency and fairness within institutions that impact the dreams and aspirations of young individuals pursuing their passions.
