I Received Threats for Defending Claims That Lagos is Smelling – Comedian Acapella

Nigerian comedian Acapella has disclosed that he received threats after publicly criticising Lagos State’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, over his response to claims that the city of Lagos smells.

The controversy began after social media influencer Scott Iguma posted a viral video describing Lagos as having an unpleasant odour and being infested with large mosquitoes. In response, Commissioner Wahab accused certain individuals – particularly migrants from other states – of using social media to spread damaging narratives aimed at tarnishing Lagos’ image.

Acapella, reacting to the commissioner’s comments, condemned what he described as double standards and a dismissive approach toward legitimate criticism. He argued that Wahab’s remarks reflected a bias against people based on their origin.

The comedian’s stance triggered intense debate online, with many supporters of the Lagos State Government confronting him on social media.

Taking to his verified X account on Tuesday, Acapella revealed that he had received multiple threats in the aftermath of the dispute.

“Over the past days, as expected, I’ve received several DMs and a few calls making empty threats here and there,” he wrote. “But let me make it clear that no Nigerian is more Nigerian than any other Nigerian.”

He added that acknowledging problems is the first step toward addressing them, stating, “Don’t let anybody gaslight you into believing you are de-marketing the country, especially when you point out the ills that befall us as a nation.”

Acapella concluded by urging unity and self-awareness, stating, “We are all we have. I hope with these few points of mine, I rest my case for now.”
