I Used to Have a Disdain for Making Money, Says Jeffrey Wright

Renowned actor Jeffrey Wright, 58, openly discusses his past “disdain for making money” during the early stages of his career, revealing a shift in mindset after becoming a father. The Hollywood star, known for his roles in various critically acclaimed productions, attributes his initial reluctance to prioritize financial gain to his youthful idealism.

Wright, who shares children Elijah and Juno with ex-wife Carmen Ejogo, shared insights in an interview with The Independent, stating, “Early on, I had a disdain for making money. In my self-righteous way, with the self-righteousness of youth, I thought it was impure.” He expressed a reluctance to engage in sitcoms or focus on creating a personal brand, resisting the idea of catering to market demands.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Wright credited his mother for instilling strong values in him. As an only child, he emphasized the influence of his mother’s high expectations and her unwavering support during his teenage years as an athlete.

“My mom had high expectations,” he said. “As a teenager, I was an athlete. I played American football and lacrosse… I could have a stellar game, and she might ask me, ‘What happened? Why did you let that one in?’”

Wright highlighted the impactful role his mother played in his life, particularly during challenging times. Caring for her after her cancer diagnosis, he acknowledged her unwavering support during pivotal moments. Despite initially challenging expectations, he recognized her as his “rock and saviour” during both the best and worst phases of his life.
