‘I Was a Lawyer by Day, Rapper by Night’ – Falz

Nigerian entertainer and rapper Falz has revealed that he once juggled a legal career by day while pursuing his passion for music at night.

During an episode of the Madam Joyce podcast, Falz, whose real name is Folarin Falana, recounted the challenges of leading a double life during his time as a practising lawyer. He explained that the legal profession frowns upon practitioners engaging in external ventures, adding a layer of complexity to his journey.

“There was a time I was in court and living a double life – lawyer by day, rapper by night,” he shared.

Falz recalled a particularly memorable moment in court when a judge called out his extracurricular activities.

“When I announced my appearance, I said, ‘With profound respect, my lord, the name is Folarin Falana, appearing for the plaintiff.’ The judge lowered his glasses and asked, ‘Counsel, are you not the one doing something else on the side?’”

He explained that within the legal field, an unwritten professional conduct rule discourages lawyers from engaging in unrelated activities.

Despite these challenges, Falz has successfully transitioned into a full-time music career, gaining widespread recognition for his artistic talents and advocacy through his lyrics.
