Illbliss Calls for Greater Unity, Highlights Igbo Contributions to Lagos Economy

Nigerian rapper Illbliss has urged Nigerians to embrace inclusivity and reject divisive rhetoric directed at non-indigenes living in different parts of the country.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Outside The Box podcast, the rapper reflected on the role of ethnic communities in national development, using the Igbo population in Lagos as an example of how non-indigenous residents contribute to economic growth.

According to Illbliss, the Igbo community has played a significant role in driving commerce and trade in Lagos, making substantial contributions to the state’s economy despite not being indigenous to the region.

“The Igbos have given a lot to the Lagos economy in terms of trade and commerce. I wonder how this town will be if you told every Igbo man to leave. So, I’m always shocked whenever I hear comments like, ‘If you’re not from Lagos State, go back to your state,’” he said.

The rapper expressed concern over the persistence of tribal and religious divisions in Nigeria, noting that such sentiments continue to hinder national cohesion despite decades of coexistence.

“We have no business being where we are as a country. We have no business not being accommodating of each other. But sadly, we are still plagued by tribalism, ethnic and religious divides,” Illbliss remarked.

He added that the country’s ongoing struggles with ethnic and religious tensions sometimes raise questions about its ability to function as a united nation.

The comments come amid continued conversations about national identity, inclusion, and the contributions of diverse communities to economic and social development across Nigeria. Illbliss’s remarks have reignited discussions about the importance of tolerance and cooperation in fostering national unity.
