In a New BMW Sedan, Drivers Can Change Lanes Using Just Their Eyes

BMW has unveiled the new 5-series sedan, featuring an innovative capability that allows drivers to change lanes simply by looking at the side mirrors.

With the optional Highway Assistant system, drivers can travel long distances on major highways without touching the steering wheel or pedals.

Unlike similar systems, where the driver has to request or approve a lane change using the turn signal, BMW’s system relies on a camera behind the steering wheel to track the driver’s gaze.
If the automated driving system suggests a lane change, the driver can initiate it by looking at the corresponding side mirror.

The camera also ensures that the driver remains attentive to the road. If the driver’s attention wavers, warnings will flash inside the car, and if the driver becomes incapacitated, the vehicle will slow down and activate the hazard lights.

Additionally, the driver can manually request a lane change by using the turn signal stalk. The system employs sensors to detect sufficient space and the absence of fast-approaching vehicles in the target lane, ensuring safety during the maneuver. It can operate at speeds up to 85 miles per hour.

The new BMW 5-series will be released in October, offering various gasoline-powered versions with four- and six-cylinder engines, as well as a fully electric model called the i5 eDrive40.

The electric variant, priced at $67,000, will have an estimated range of 295 miles on a full charge. Plug-in hybrid versions of the car are expected to become available next year.

With these advanced features and multiple engine options, the new BMW 5-series aims to provide an elevated driving experience that combines convenience, safety, and sustainability.
