Jay-Z Settles ‘500K or Dinner’ Debate, Chooses Cash

In a recent interview with CBS News’ Gayle King inside his “Book of HOV” library exhibit in Brooklyn, JAY-Z definitively settled the long-standing “500K or dinner with JAY-Z?” debate, opting for the cash.

The Roc Nation mogul was asked to choose between receiving $500,000 or having dinner with him, and without hesitation, he responded, “You gotta take the money.” JAY-Z argued that he’s shared invaluable wisdom and insights in his music for years, and there wouldn’t be much more to add during a dinner conversation.

He stated, “What I’ma say? You got all that [wisdom] in the music for $10.99! That’s a bad deal. I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal. Take the $500,000, go buy some albums and listen to the albums — it’s all there!”

JAY-Z highlighted that everything he predicted or wanted to achieve in his life can be found in his music, offering a blueprint to his journey. He suggested that by carefully listening to his lyrics, fans can piece together his life story and the wisdom he imparts.

The debate initially emerged on social media in 2021, with fans contemplating the choice between the cash prize and a meal with the rap legend. Even TIDAL, JAY-Z’s former streaming platform, weighed in by advising fans on Twitter to take the money.

The rapper was recently approached by a fan during the Los Angeles Chargers vs. Dallas Cowboys game at SoFi Stadium, where the fan expressed his preference for the cash. JAY-Z graciously acknowledged the sentiment and offered a fist bump, wishing the fan well.

However, the fan faced some backlash for the boldness of his comments. Some people criticized his approach and felt it overshadowed the personal conversation between them.

While the debate is now officially settled, JAY-Z made it clear that his music already contains the wisdom and knowledge he has to offer, making it a valuable source of insight and inspiration for his fans.

The full two-part interview will air on CBS on Thursday (Oct 26) and Friday (October 27). For now, watch a teaser below:
