Jungle Justice a Deterrent to Crime in Nigeria – Skales Claims
Nigerian singer Skales has sparked conversation after suggesting that extrajudicial punishments, often referred to as jungle justice, contribute to Nigeria’s lower crime rate compared to countries like the United Kingdom.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Just Vibes podcast, the Afrobeats star claimed that the fear of mob justice discourages many potential criminals in Nigeria from acting on their intentions.
“There is lesser crime in Nigeria compared to the UK because criminals know that if they get caught, there’s jungle justice. They burn you alive,” Skales said.
However, the singer was quick to clarify that he does not support or condone the practice, acknowledging that such actions fall outside the bounds of the law and often lead to tragic consequences.
In the same interview, Skales also shared his thoughts on the evolving nature of Afrobeats. He argued that the genre defies strict definitions, describing it instead as an umbrella term that houses a range of diverse musical styles.
“No one can really say how Afrobeats is supposed to sound. It keeps evolving, and that’s the beauty of it,” he said.
