Kate Henshaw Criticises Nigerian Laws as Biased Against Women
Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out against what she describes as systemic legal and cultural biases that disadvantage women in Nigeria.
In a recent appearance on Arise TV, Henshaw expressed concern over the way women are treated under Nigerian law and within society, arguing that the legal framework tends to favour men, particularly in matters relating to domestic violence and gender equality.
“The laws in Nigeria – including those meant to protect individuals from violence – often still lean in favour of men,” she said during the interview. “For instance, there are still provisions that permit a man to ‘chastise’ his wife. Why should that even exist in today’s world?”
Henshaw also touched on broader societal attitudes, saying that many Nigerian men are conditioned to see women as inferior. Drawing on biblical references, she challenged the perception that women were created to be beneath men.
“God created woman from man’s side, not from under his feet. She was made to stand beside him, not below him,” she said. “But sadly, in this country, women are still treated as second-class citizens.”
The actress’s comments have sparked conversations on social media about gender equity and the urgent need for legislative reform in Nigeria.
