Killer Mike Proudly Defends ‘Rap Album of the Year’ Title

Renowned rapper Killer Mike is not holding back his excitement after his album “MICHAEL” secured the prestigious title of “Rap Album of the Year” at this year’s DX Awards. In a statement on Saturday (December 23), the acclaimed artist expressed his gratitude for the recognition and took the opportunity to shed light on the album’s unique and impactful features.

During his remarks, Killer Mike emphasized the diversity of themes covered in “MICHAEL,” acknowledging its exploration of love, solidarity, and the complexities of addiction. He specifically pointed out the album’s groundbreaking approach in celebrating the human experience, including perspectives often overlooked in mainstream rap.

“I don’t say that lightly when I say, ‘Album of the Year.’ This album pushed the emotions of masculinity past where rap had prior. It acknowledges women — Black women — that evolved me in a different way. It acknowledges addiction in a radically different way,” Killer Mike passionately expressed.

The rapper highlighted the album’s significant departure from conventional rap narratives and praised its willingness to delve into the nuances of life, from relationships with women to the portrayal of addiction in a more empathetic light.

In the DX Awards summary, Killer Mike’s “MICHAEL,” executive produced by No ID, was described as an “eclectic, heartfelt swirl of majestic soul and songwriting.” The album, lasting about 54 minutes, received acclaim for its emotional depth, intricate instrumentation, and incorporation of gospel choirs reminiscent of Black churches in the South.

While recognizing the tough competition from other notable albums, DX asserted, “Whether the GRAMMYs get it right or not, this is the Rap Album of the Year.”

The runners-up in the category included Danny Brown’s “Quaranta,” Metro Boomin’s “Heroes & Villains,” Nas’ “Magic 3,” and Travis Scott’s “UTOPIA.” Killer Mike’s victory at the DX Awards adds another milestone to his illustrious career and underscores the album’s impact on the rap music landscape.
