Luis Rubiales: Spain Football President’s Mother Goes on Hunger Strike After Kiss Controversy

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has declined a request from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to suspend itself amid allegations of government interference in its affairs. The RFEF had raised concerns with UEFA regarding alleged Spanish government involvement in its internal matters. The issue arose after Luis Rubiales, the president of RFEF, was investigated for his actions after Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory, where he kissed Jenni Hermoso.

According to UEFA statutes, member associations are expected to manage their own affairs independently, without any external influence. The RFEF’s request for suspension, if granted, could have led to Spanish clubs and national teams being excluded from European competitions.

UEFA has been in communication with FIFA concerning the Rubiales case, mainly since the Women’s World Cup falls under FIFA’s jurisdiction. In light of this, it was agreed that FIFA’s disciplinary bodies would address the matter.

Yolanda Diaz, Spain’s labour minister, criticized Rubiales’ actions as “sexual aggression” and condemned his behaviour, describing it as “not representative of our country.” She further expressed her disappointment that FIFA, rather than the Spanish government, sanctioned Rubiales.

In response to the allegations and scrutiny, Rubiales’ mother, Angeles Bejar, has taken a strong stance. She initiated a hunger strike in protest against what she deemed “inhumane treatment” of her son following the controversial kiss incident. Rubiales has not stepped down from his position and continues to contest the allegations. He was suspended by FIFA but delivered a defiant speech, claiming to be a victim of a “false feminist” witch-hunt.

Rubiales’ refusal to resign led the RFEF to convene an “extraordinary and urgent” meeting to address the situation. Meanwhile, Bejar’s hunger strike has drawn attention to the case, with her locked inside a church and seeking a resolution to the allegations against her son.

The incident has sparked a broader conversation on gender issues in Spain. The country has witnessed widespread demonstrations against sexual abuse and violence, and the government has introduced legal reforms to address concerns related to gender equality and rights.

Rubiales’ case illustrates the intersection of sports, politics, and gender issues, highlighting the challenges in maintaining the integrity of sporting organizations amid broader societal debates.
