Made Kuti Explains Why He Doesn’t Prioritise Material Possessions
Afrobeat musician and Grammy nominee, Made Kuti, has shared his personal philosophy on material wealth, revealing that he places little value on owning luxury items.
Speaking during a recent interview with Pulse, the artist said his perspective on materialism is rooted in his upbringing, which shaped a mindset focused more on purpose and values than on accumulating possessions.
“I don’t care much about materialistic things,” Kuti said. “Maybe my dad was very clever with how he raised us. But I’m the kind of person who just does what he wants.”
The grandson of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti questioned the necessity of owning multiple luxury cars, pointing out that they are depreciating assets.
“For example, how many cars do you need to drive? I genuinely don’t understand why you need seven or eight cars. In the next couple of years, they will depreciate. So, it’s weird to me—but it’s an interest to another person,” he explained.
Kuti, who continues to build on his family’s legacy of music and activism, said he prefers to channel his energy into more meaningful pursuits, rather than material accumulation.
