Nigeria Police Launch Investigation into Armed Officers Escorting Actress Angela Okorie in Viral Video

The Nigeria Police Force has opened an investigation into a viral video that shows Nollywood actress Angela Okorie jogging in public while being escorted by armed officers.

The footage, which surfaced online earlier this week, sparked a flurry of reactions on social media – not for the actress’s presence, but for the visibly armed police officers jogging behind her in full gear. Many Nigerians questioned the appropriateness of such a display, especially amid pressing national security concerns.

In a statement posted Wednesday on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi condemned the officers’ conduct, describing it as inconsistent with the professional standards expected of members of the Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force strongly frowns at the conduct of armed police officers seen in a viral video trailing actress Angela Okorie while she jogged – an act considered clearly inconsistent with the professional standards and decorum expected of personnel of the Force,” the statement read.

While initial speculation suggested the video may have been taken on the set of Okorie’s latest film project Queens of Guns, Adejobi noted that whether scripted or not, the officers’ behavior remains questionable and under review.

“The incident, which appears to have occurred on or around a movie set, has also sparked widespread public concern and criticism. Necessary administrative processes have been initiated to identify the officers involved and determine the circumstances surrounding the video,” the statement continued. “Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken based on the outcome of the review.”

As of press time, Angela Okorie has not publicly responded to the controversy.

The video has triggered a wave of reactions online, with some users criticizing the police for misplaced priorities, while others defended the officers’ presence, assuming it may have been part of a film production.

A user @issyluv commented, “They are private citizens, they should be able to hire the services of private security. In a sane country that’s what needs to be done.”

Others urged the police to focus on more pressing national issues. “Focus on Benue killings first,” wrote @wf_iscobossy, while @basbeegram added, “Go and find your officers robbing people and molesting them on the highways.”

Still, some commended the Force for acknowledging the public’s concerns. “Good to read this from the official handle of the police. Glad your team is paying attention,” said @barrysome.

The investigation is ongoing.
